On the other hand, if you don't mind the cost or the subscription and would rather someone have done all the legwork of getting the PHB/Monster Manual/Lost Mines of Phandelver into playable form because it saves you time then make the switch to FG.

If you don't care about automation, dice rolling, VTT character sheets, ect then using Roll20's free version is great. Now, if you are the kind of group who has someone that doesn't mind all the set-up time then I would think MapTools is fine. The FG community is also really fabulous, super helpful people, and you have pretty direct access to the devs. The combat tracker is the best I've seen, the fact that you actually roll dice with your mouse was a huge hole we didn't even realize we were missing until we switched, and it's not so complicated that it would take you forever to learn the ins and outs as a DM. Feature wise it's the only VTT we've found that provides great automation and simulation.

Personally, my group and I just paid for it up-front (I bought an Ultimate license which lets anyone with the free demo connect to me and use all the bells and whistles at zero cost to themselves) and that's payed itself off many fold over the last year and a half. The program is also competitively priced compared to the equal offerings of their main competition - you can either buy it up-front or do a monthly subscription.
The Fantasy Grounds team is like 3 guys, and they lobbied hard to get the license despite WoTC being notoriously difficult to deal with when it comes to digital tools. Roll20 was the outgrowth of a couple kickstarters and would probably not have the funding or possibly willingness to go so corporate Not sure about an abbreviated stat sheet, seems even more confusing and more work for them and me.Īs essentially the only actual business in this field they were likely the only choice for Hasbro. have them share my dice since i doubt they have any
photocopies of the monster manual's creatures pictures i end up using (or just show it to them briefly?) some tokens to represent minis since i only have one and it's for my regular game character a simple dungeon (thinking kobolds or undead is great idea), with map One of them had been wanting to try it for years but been too shy to go meet random people she doesn't know, especially as a novice.
Hoping if they like it they will look for a more recurring thing closer to home. This is probably a one shoot as two people live over an hour away and one does not have a car. I know another person wanted to make a priest so maybe I'll make a couple of priests to choose from. My wife (one if the players at this theoretical incoming game) suggested i pre-generate some characters too.
